FAQs
What is a national park access pass?
The Access Pass is a free lifetime pass for US citizens or permanent residents with permanent disabilities. It provides free entry to over 2,000 federal recreation sites including all National Parks, National Forests, Wildlife Refuges, and other federal lands. It also offers 50% discounts on expanded amenity fees like camping.
What documentation does ParkingMD provide?
Our licensed physicians provide a signed statement confirming your permanent disability, describing the nature of your limitations, and explaining how it impacts your daily life activities. This physician statement meets the federal requirements for obtaining the Access Pass at any participating federal recreation site or through the USGS online store.
How long does the process take?
After completing your online evaluation with one of our licensed physicians, you'll receive your signed documentation within 24–48 hours via email. From there, you can obtain your Access Pass in person the same day at a participating site, or order online through USGS (shipping times vary).
How is this different from a disability parking permit?
A disability parking permit allows you to park in designated accessible spaces and is issued by your state DMV. The Access Pass is a federal pass that provides free entry to National Parks and other federal recreation sites. They are separate programs with overlapping eligibility criteria, many people who qualify for a parking permit also qualify for the Access Pass.
Can my family and friends use my Access Pass?
The Access Pass provides entry for the pass holder and accompanying passengers in a single, private, non-commercial vehicle at per-vehicle fee areas. At sites that charge per-person fees, the pass covers the pass holder plus up to three additional adults. Children age 15 and under are always admitted free at National Park Service sites.
What if I already have documentation from the VA or Social Security?
If you have a document from the Veterans Administration, Social Security Disability Income (SSDI), or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you can use that documentation directly to obtain your Access Pass at a federal recreation site or through the USGS online store, no additional physician evaluation is needed.
