I was recovering from knee surgery and couldn’t drive to a clinic. This platform made everything so easy—I had my evaluation from home and received my DMV. I truly felt supported throughout the process.

Disability Parking in Nebraska:
Everything You Need to Know

Nebraska Disability Parking Laws

  • Qualifying conditions include inability to travel more than 200 feet without assistance (wheelchair, crutch, walker, prosthetic, or other device), severe visual/physical/neurological impairment, severe respiratory problems, Class III or Class IV cardiac condition, or loss of all or substantially all use of one or more limbs.
  • A licensed physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner must certify your condition on the Application for Handicapped Parking Permit form.
  • Permanent permits are valid for 6 years.
  • Temporary permits are valid for 3 or 6 months and may be renewed once for an additional 3 or 6 months.
  • Misuse of a handicapped parking permit results in suspension of the permit for 6 months and possible fines.
  • The permit is not transferable, cannot be altered or reproduced, and may only be used by the person to whom it was issued or for the specific vehicle assigned.
  • The permit must be displayed on the rearview mirror when parked in a designated handicapped space (or on the dashboard if no rearview mirror exists). It should not be displayed while the vehicle is in motion.
  • Each handicapped individual is allowed up to two (2) permits.
  • Nebraska-licensed medical professionals can submit applications online. Out-of-state medical professionals require paper applications mailed to the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles.

Documents You’ll Need

To apply for, replace, or renew a Nebraska disability parking placard, here’s what you need:

New Permanent or Temporary Permit

To apply for a new disability parking permit in Nebraska, you’ll need:

  • Application for Handicapped Parking Permit form, completed and signed by a licensed doctor
  • Photocopy of acceptable proof of identification (valid driver’s license, state ID card, certified birth certificate, passport, or other reliable form containing date of birth)

Online Doctor’s Certification

If applying through a telehealth service like ParkingMD, you can get your evaluation done completely online.

  • If your medical professional is licensed in Nebraska, they will submit your certification directly through the online system and your permit will be mailed to you by the DMV
  • If your medical professional is not licensed in Nebraska, you’ll receive a completed Application for Handicapped Parking Permit form signed by them, which you must mail with a photocopy of acceptable identification to the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles

Lost or Stolen Placard Replacement

If your placard is lost or stolen, you’ll need to provide:

  • Application for Handicapped Parking Permit form (medical certification not required if your current permit is still valid)
  • Check the “Replacement” box on the application
  • Include your permit number
  • Photocopy of acceptable proof of identification

Note: You are limited to two (2) replacement permits. If both are lost or stolen, you must submit a new application with medical certification.
